Please include the following comment:
As a physician, I am well aware of driving issues in the elderly. I am all the more alert since I am a passenger in my mother's car.
But the respondent brings up an excellent point, however, that deficits can often show up in one area and may be more "global" in nature; for example, having difficulties with remembering your phone numbers can translate into trouble remembering where to make a left turn.
There are a whole host of issues that can come up in the evaluation of an episode of forgetfulness from transient ischemic attacks to nutritional deficiency to dementia. It is for this reason, we took my Mom to the doctor's office two days later and Mom has not been doing any of the driving. Families do need to intervene preemptively if there's a question about driving safety because it is everyone who is at risk: the elderly driver, the passengers, and the other families on the road.
Best, Allan Hamilton

It is indeed heartbreaking when a parent or loved one begins to lose their memory. It also brings with it fear about what the future may hold.
That being said, the one thing that really disturbed me about this article was that the author, who, as a physician, should know better, did not bring up the subject of "driving" with his mother. He simply brushed it under the rug, like too many adult children do.
When a person begins to have trouble with gate codes, it is a sign that their mind is not working as well as it once did.
When a person completely drives off, leaving her son alone to HOP 1/4 mile to the garage, something that would be completely uncharacteristic of her, it is a sign that this person should NOT be driving.
What if she forgets that the light is red or that she is even AT a light? What if her "muscle memory" fails and she steps on the gas instead of the brake?
What if she suddenly forgets where she is and how to get home?
Dr. Hamilton, you missed the perfect opportunity to have a discussion about driving with your mother and as such, put the rest of us in danger.

In order to get the maximum benefit from life insurances, you should seek guidance from an insurance expert. You need to explore different kinds of life insurance policies before settling for one.

This is a great post for caregivers to use to identify and become aware of specific stressors. In addition to volunteers from churches and synagogues, also consider finding a local music therapist to work/play with your loved one for a couple of hours at a time. Music is a powerful healing modality that reduces agitation and stress in the older adults as well as in the caregiver. Research shows that drumming is especially effective in reducing cortisol levels and stress, and enhancing quality of life.
Cheers, Kat http://www.CurrentsInMusic.com

We too hear from customers how stressful the caregiving duties can be. We encourage people to look into tools (as well as people support) to help ease some of the stress. We have developed a pill box that uses cellular communications to inform caregivers if their loved ones missed their medications. The caregivers we have worked with greatly appreciate the real-time notifications from the system and say the pill box gives them peace of mind. Laura Helliwell, www.medminder.com

I have expressed the following thoughts before on several blogs. However, I believe they are worth repeating. Caregiver burnout is a major issue for those with this awesome responsibility. Don't overlook the role of humor to make things more bearable. Things that made me angry and frustrated when my mother (who had dementia)was alive, in retrospect are filled with funny happenings. This is true too for the many caregivers who read my blog and contact me about my book which emphasizes humor as a healing balm. Caregivers need all the emotional support they can get. Dementia is a disease that knows no boundaries. It is blind to the
categories in which we usually place our fellow human beings. It can occur at the age of 55 or 85. It can happen to Blacks, Whites, Hispanics, Asians, Jews, Christians, Muslims, males and females, rich and poor. It will not spare ex-presidents or ex-prime ministers. It did not spare my mother. Tears are shed by husbands and wives, sons and daughters, brothers and sisters—in fact anyone responsible for the care of a loved one with dementia.

Selecting the type of insurance and the specific program that most closely fits your needs requires a lot of background research. Luckily there are many resources in print and online for helping you navigate the maze of information.

There are numerous types of life insurance available, each built to fit unique circumstances and individual needs. Depending on whether your goal is to leave money so your folks can pay your last costs or just to provide them with savings.

I agree with you James. There should be less reliance on medications and I often recommend alternatives to medications when clinically indicated. Unfortunately, it isn't always accepted with an open mind. Many patients want a quick-fix.

My 2 cents: I am hoping to see less of a reliance on medications when it comes to illnesses like sinusitis. Now I am not saying that medication and surgery does not have its use just that I think people need to make sure they are exploring all their options first.
Even in the case of chronic sinusitis, there are options like balloon sinuplasty that do more to work with the body than traditional sinus surgery.

The original, performed by Nini Rosso in 1965, brought me to tears when I heard it on the radio in Japan at that time, and it does to this day. When I left Japan in '66 I thought I'd never hear it again, but here it is, for us all.

This is one of those rare pieces that makes just about anything else seem cheap and tawdry by comparison - there are many versions on YouTube, all of them exquisite. This version is as deep and powerful as any of them. Some of the richest nourishment for the soul you will find in This World, filling the heart with the light of Heaven. "Thanks be to G'd."

Be nourished,

This article is so to the point. The truth very clearly realized by the writer and insight into how the feelings of so many are caught on an edge of the unknown.
A friend of mine that I am assisting in the reinvention of one self as I call it is a task that takes full time committment. Once your turn over information I find myself turning it over again to see there is anything I missed the first time that might help more. The examination of one self in their late 50's is not what most of us expected. This is frightening at best to think you might not be able to live your life out taking care of yourself and your family needs. We all need to have cheerleaders to help, so I do hope that anyone who is gainfully employed as I am, will help someone else with their search. Networking and idea sharing is the very best tools we have at this time. Make someone smile by offering to assist them and not wait for them to come to you for your help. Have a Happy Valentine's Day. Adrienne

My suggestion for beginners is to walk 30 minutes a day. Each and every day!

Walk at a constant pace that challenges you. If you are a real beginner - walk slower. But it still should be a challenge.

Combine this with reducing the amount of processed foods that you eat and replace those foods with natural foods. You know - the ones you have to cook yourself.

You will be amazed at the difference.
