December 21, 2012. We hear this date so frequently now, thanks in part to movie trailers. But is there an underlying truth in its meaning, or is it just Hollywood hype for getting great box office revenues?
In fact, this date is full of meaning according to Mayan calendars — for all of us, not just the Maya. This date is based on an astronomical alignment of our winter solstice sun in the galactic center of the Milky Way –marking and symbolizing the ending of the current world age (approximately 5,125 years) and its grand cycle (approximately 26,000 years) and the birthing of the new one.
Connecting with the natural rhythm of nature, such as the day and seasonal cycles, we know time is essentially cyclical, not linear. Inherent in all cycles are four phases: increasing energy, most expanded, withdrawing energy, and most contracted – experienced in our breath, the development of humanity, and the movement of the planets. Although we can discreetly measure the end and the beginning of cycles, there is always a time of transition or change. We are living in that transition time now!
Imbedded in the Maya calendars is the cycle of gestation and birthing. This “end” date is the “due” date. The Universe, physically and spiritually, is providing the opportunity for a new life. Using this metaphor, it is the natural rhythm to balance the pressures and contractions of our times with cleansing, centering, renewing breaths.
We have choice – free will – as to what meaning we will place on this experience, individually and globally. We can take “pause”, especially during stressful times, by shifting our attention away from worries and distractions to becoming present in our breath.
Maya wisdom (and universal truths) reminds us that inherently the universe is in balance and synchronous movement – and all energy/beings are interconnected. If we impose conditions of imbalance (remaining in either of the extremes), the universal energy will naturally present opportunity to shift back into balance.
Balancing action with stillness is the rhythm that provides purposeful awareness in living. From the place of stillness, we can take appropriate action – action that brings harmony and balance into every day.
We are living in a wonderful time of ending and beginning. Can we say
- “YES” to the ENDING of fear, isolation, greed, separateness, power over, individual at the expense of other, depletion
AND
- “YES” to BEGINNING of peace, wholeness, sharing, connectedness, power within, individuation in co-operation, renewal?
NOW is the time for each of us actively to choose “unity”: when all of us are unified in harmony, compassion, love, peace. Let us celebrate December 21, 2012 as Humanity’s Birth Day.
