Where To Do Yoga?

written by Angelena Craig

Where To Do YogaWhen Yoga had its revival in popularity in the not too distant past, it was taught primarily in Yoga studios, a place where learning and practicing this ancient healing art was taken seriously. Students signed up for a series of classes and made a firm, and financial, commitment to come to class on a regular basis.

Some of these earlier yoga studios have survived but many of them have closed primarily because classes are offered just about  everywhere now…the Y’s, health clubs, churches, adult ed programs, martial arts studios, and more. This trend has its positive side since yoga is much more available in most every town and with many choices in bigger cities.

However, the down side is that the teaching environment and the teacher’s qualifications may be compromised. Alternative sites may be full of noise, bright lights and people coming and going. The teacher may have a background in leading exercise classes and may have gone through a quick training to teach something they call yoga.

When there is a choice, you may have a much more satisfying experience in a studio which has been set up and dedicated to offering only yoga classes, and with highly qualified teachers.  Most studio yoga classes provide a peaceful environment.  Studios are equipped with the props to make your experience more satisfying, including rubber mats, blocks, straps, eye bags and pillows. The curriculum will cover learning and practicing all the basic asanas, ( poses or postures), pranayama, (conscious breathing techniques), and meditation or relaxation techniques. The teacher will have completed at least 200 hours of basic training from a qualified teaching school.

Yoga offers so much more than just the next best workout, so when looking for the place to learn and practice, do your homework, ask questions and if one environment or teacher does not work for you, try another.
