Empty Nester: Will You Share What You Want to Change?

written by Natalie Caine, M.A.

Will You Share What you Want to Change?Did that very question make you uncomfortable?  Did you have a voice pop up that said something like, “I don’t want to tell anyone because what if I fail at the IT or worse, I don’t even follow through with what it is I want to change or did you hear yourself say, oh leave me alone with all this change talk?” You honestly aren’t alone with those thoughts in your head.

I have an idea for you. Research has shown that support is key in making changes. Websites can be a safe harbor for you to get support. You can pour your and thoughts out and ask questions. I know you know this. I am just a reminder that we at Empty Nest Support Services are always building a safe community for you to be heard, not feel abnormal, or judged for this life transition you have to travel. As you have discovered…you have no choice. Change happens. Children leave and your role shifts in an instant. The house is too silent and the mind begins to chatter too loud in your sweet head with doubts and worry.

You have some choices about how to get support with this stage of your life. You can post thoughts and questions on the free message board on the website or you can email me, natalie@emptynestsupport.com, with the thoughts you are having about changing. I know it isn’t easy to find the words, write them and open to vulnerability. I also know how much support has helped me when I am sad, stuck, lonely, or just acted like a fool and need to clean up my mess.

I began Empty Nest Support Services in the hopes no one would go through this major filled with joy and challenges, alone. Even happy changes need support. New is new.

So, what change, if you had all the support and finances available to you, would you like to begin? You do get to change your mind…take a pause, start over. I’m not a cheerleader or consequence enforcer. I am here to listen and offer support. What comes to mind each day or evening that seems to keep revisiting your thoughts?  Is it your children, grandchildren, in-laws, work, partner, money, health, boredom, education, aging, loneliness, fatigue, isolation, unhappiness, or a combination of the above? Let yourself take a tiny step towards not having to hold these thoughts without support.
